Background story A sovereign workspace
openDesk continues the 'Sovereign Workspace' project, which was initiated by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. Its goal: to reduce critical dependencies of the public administration on individual software providers. With openDesk, federal, state, and local authorities receive a comprehensive office solution that operates in any browser and on all devices, irrespective of the provider.
Development Developed in Germany and Europe
Since January 2024, the Centre for Digital Sovereignty (ZenDiS GmbH) - a company of the German federal government - has taken over the development of openDesk. It develops openDesk in close cooperation with the German public administration, established open source vendors and numerous European partners. ZenDiS supports the current and future users of openDesk in the public administration and runs the Open CoDE platform, on which openDesk is provided as free software.
